Serious roleplay (serious RP) is a way of playing GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 online where you play a character, not yourself. You stay in that character, act the way they would in their world, and treat what happens to them as if it has consequences. Serious RP servers, such as Known Associates on GTA V and High Country on Red Dead Redemption 2, run on FiveM and RedM with written rules and a whitelist, so everyone in the city or the territory is playing the same way.
This guide explains what that means in practice, how to start if roleplay is new to you, and why it matters where a server is hosted if you play from Australia or New Zealand.
What makes roleplay serious
On a standard online session, you play to win: you take what you can, and losing costs you a respawn. On a serious RP server, you play a story. A few ideas sit under most serious roleplay communities:
- You are a character. Your character has a name, a past, a job and reasons for what they do. What you say and do in the game belongs to them.
- Stay in character. You keep the roleplay going in the game, and you take out-of-character talk to the places the server sets aside for it.
- Actions have consequences. If your character takes a risk, they live with the result, the way a person in that world would.
- Play with people, not at them. Good roleplay gives other players something to react to. A story is better when both sides get to play it.
- The rules are the shared ground. Every serious server writes its own rules. They decide what is allowed, and they are what staff hold everyone to.
Every server defines these in its own words, so the rules of the server you join always come first. On Black Dingo servers the rules are written down and public on the Discord, staff come from the community, and there is no pay-to-win: money never buys an advantage in the city.
New to RP
Nobody starts good at roleplay. The house rules at Black Dingo are short: show the work, no pay-to-win, and newcomers welcome. Here is how to start well.
Before you play
- Read the rules first. Know the city before you land in it. Most of what trips up new players is in the rules.
- Build a simple character. A name, a reason to be in town and one thing they want is enough to start. Your character grows with the stories they end up in.
- Watch and listen. Spend your first sessions taking in how others play. You will learn the pace of the city fast.
In your first sessions
- Start small. A job, a few conversations and a couple of contacts make a better start than a big plan.
- Ask in the right place. If you are unsure about a rule, ask out of character in the Discord, not in the middle of a scene.
- Let things happen to your character. The best stories come from moments that did not go to plan.
Picking a server
Pick a server that suits the way you want to play. Black Dingo runs two: Known Associates, serious roleplay on GTA V with crews, businesses and the law that chases them, and High Country, serious roleplay on Red Dead Redemption 2 with outlaws, lawmen and the towns caught between them. Both are 18+ and whitelisted through Discord.
Australian servers and American servers
Many roleplay servers are hosted in the United States or Europe. Where a server is hosted changes how it plays from Australia and New Zealand, for two reasons: distance and time.
Distance and ping
Your ping is the time it takes for your game to talk to the server and back. Every action you take goes to the server and returns, so a lower ping makes driving, riding and talking to other players feel more immediate. The further the server is from you, the longer that trip takes: traffic to a server in the United States has to cross the Pacific and back. A server hosted in Australia is far closer to players in Australia and New Zealand, so the same actions feel more responsive. Known Associates and High Country are hosted in Sydney and Melbourne.
Time zones and peak hours
Roleplay is best when the city is busy. Servers fill up in the evening of the region most of their players live in. When it is evening in the United States, it is morning or the middle of the day in Australia, so the busiest hours of an American server can land while you are at work or school. A server built for Oceania keeps its busy hours in Australian and New Zealand evenings.
That is why Black Dingo builds for Oceania first, with a global roadmap planned.
